About the Doctors

Dr. Jewell - A native of the South Shore neighborhood in Chicago, Dr. Leonard Jewell graduated from Tufts School of Veterinary Medicine in North Grafton, Massachusetts in 1998. After briefly working in Massachusetts in both emergency and small animal medicine, Dr. Jewell got the opportunity to work at All Creatures Animal Hospital in Lake Zurich, Illinois under the tutelage of Dr. Andy Cox. Moving to Palm Springs, California, Dr. Jewell worked at Desert Animal Hospital, again, honing his skills at small animal oncology, internal medicine, emergency medicine, and surgery. Before starting Jewell Animal Hospital in March 2007, Dr. Jewell worked as a contract veterinarian in Chicago and the southwest and northwest suburbs. Working at close to fifty veterinary practices over the course of four years has enabled Dr. Jewell to envision the type of personalized hospital experience not found at most veterinary facilities in the area. Dr. Jewell has two sixteen-year-old cats, Elsa and Tiger, both found as alley kittens in the South End of Boston.

Dr. Mitchell - Dr. Patrick Mitchell joined our practice in September 2008. He was born in Ohio, then moved to New York and eventually South Carolina. Dr. Mitchell graduated from Mississippi State University - College of Veterinary Medicine in 2000. From graduation he practiced in Jacksonville, Florida for 3 years, then spent about 2 years in Oahu, Hawaii, and then South Carolina for 3 years.

He moved to Chicago in 2007 where he practiced in Lincoln Park before coming to Jewell Animal Hospital. His main areas of interest are small animal internal medicine and soft tissue surgery. Outside of work Dr. Mitchell and his wife Bethany enjoy taking their daughter Scarlette Q to all the parks in the Lincoln Square area and showing her everything else the city has to offer.

Dr. Neihaus - Dr. Tmima Neihaus graduated from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in 2006. She completed a small animal internship the following year at Animal Emergency and Referral Center in Northbrook. She spent the next four years in general practice in Jacksonville, Florida. Dr. Neihaus then returned to the Chicago area with her husband Steven, who is a veterinary surgeon, their son Noah, dogs Lucy and Miko, and cat JJ. She enjoys all aspects of veterinary medicine especially dentistry, wellness consultations, and educating clients on routine puppy and kitten examinations. While not working, Dr. Neihaus enjoys being a mom, cooking, baking and traveling.

Dr. Plourde - Dr. Robert Plourde graduated from St. George's University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2011 and completed his clinical training at the University of Minnesota. He then completed a small animal internship the following year at VCA Aurora/Berwyn. During his internship he trained with veterinary internists, surgeons, dermatologists, radiologists, neurologists, cardiologists, and oncologists. He found this experience to be invaluable as it enhances his approach to each of his patients.

Dr. Plourde joined Jewell Animal Hospital in the summer of 2012. Dr. Plourde enjoys all aspects of veterinary medicine especially focusing on client education. His main areas of interest include surgery, dentistry, and emergency medicine. Outside of work Dr. Plourde enjoys exploring the city with his girlfriend, Kelsey, and their dogs Lola, Leeloo, and Moo.
